Hand-forged Blanket or Cloak Broach Pin/Clasp
Based on antique designs of the early 1800's, this iron clasp was used by fur traders and American Indians to secure the colorful blankets wrapped around themselves as cloaks. Measuring about 2.5" L by 2.25" W, this sturdy broach is made of hand-forged iron. A wonderful keepsake and useful item for re-enactors, too!
The broach is made using some of the basic techniques of a blacksmith: drawing a taper, curling a scroll, and twisting a square bar. Apprentice blacksmiths at Fort Vancouver learned these important methods used to make many iron objects of the past. All are made by volunteer blacksmiths at Fort Vancouver.
