Shipwrecked in Japan! Lt. Broughton of Vancouver Expedition
In 1792, Lt. Broughton led the Vancouver expedition to chart 100 miles upstream in the Columbia River, naming “Mt. Hood” and “Pt. Vancouver,” site of the City of Vancouver today. Five years later Broughton and his crew were shipwrecked aboard the HMS Providence on the uncharted coral reef Miyako Island now a part of Japan. The phantom island appears at sea level only once a year due to low tides. In 2019, Mr. Mockford visited the island and met historians who laud Broughton and his crew. Learn about this adventure then and now.
